Northern Ireland Geography Enrichment Day 2

Céad míle fáilte!

We began the day bright and early with a walking tour of Londonderry, including views from the top of the city walls – you could say it was legenDERRY.  Our tour guide, Neil, was very knowledgeable about the history of The Walled City and how conflict has continued to shape its urban and economic geography.  He brought his city alive and had the answers to every question we could possibly ask. (We would also like to wish him a happy birthday!) Then, in true Abbey girl style we stampeded the local shopping centre and had a quick hot drink before we headed back out into the cold. Our next stop was the Memorial Hall and museum run by the Unionist organisation, The Apprentice Boys’; however, despite the fascinating history of the organisation, we felt injustice over the fact that women are not permitted membership to the club. Afterwards, we headed to the Free Derry Museum where we learned about the events of Bloody Sunday, told by a grandson of one of the 14 who were killed. There, we were also shocked to see the size of the rubber bullets used by both sides in the conflict.  It is admirable that this moving exhibition was established by the relatives of these victims. Throughout our tours today, we have been intrigued by the provocative street murals and graffiti which reflect the Bogside’s political views of The Troubles. Last but not least, we would like to thank our wonderful coach driver Gary, who went out of his way today to drive us to two extra extraordinary places that on the way home which allowed for some spectacular photos and views; Grianan of Aileach is a 6000 BC hillfort with commanding views of six counties of Ireland and Dunluce Castle, which looked like it should have been used as a Game of Thrones set.

Slán!
